Creating this blog last week made me think a lot about how I would use it in a classroom. In a lot of ways I could see it truly benefiting students. It would be great to have kids conversing with one another over a blog on any sort of topic. I don't really see a blog being used as anything other than a discussion board, but it would be fantastic at that. I could envision students posting their views on current issues, talking with one another about the best way to approach situations, or complimenting one another's work. I teach technology to 6th 7th and 8th graders. I find it is most difficult for them to explain what they think or feel about something. These blogs would greatly assist students in learning to convey feelings and ideas.

I agree that it would make a great discussion area, especially for students who have difficulty speaking out in class. Can you think of ways to incorporate other classes or students into a discussion? For example, would it benefit your 6th graders to be able to discuss topics with the 8th graders? Maybe the older students could help them work through technological problems.
ReplyDeleteThat is one of my hopes, to have my junior high students communicate with other students at other school districts or in other parts of the country to share ideas.
I agree with you at this time about only being able to use a blog site as a discussion and comment board. I am very new to the concept of using blogs in education but I am excited about how it can change my class. Maybe you could post a rubric of the discussion topic and grade each student for discussion and new ideas.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I am very new to all of this too. It is very exciting. I am a tad envious of teachers who teach older students. You can allow for more freedom. But, I find great joy in introducing something new to second graders and seeing their "light bulbs" go off! Blogging will be fun. I am using mine for a final draft display!
ReplyDeleteI too am new to blogging and I am hesitant to jump in too fast with my students. I believe that starting out with a discussion board will allow all to get comfortable with this new element in the classroom. I believe the more we blog with our students the more posibilities there will be that present themselves.
